Josefine Heinemann: „A banana for a little hunger and a walk every day“

2. February 2024

Josephine Heinemann

Josefine Heinemann is part of the german squad in the Mitropacup women's tournament and tells us her recipes for success.

What personal goals do you have for the Mitropa Cup 2024?

In general I want to play good and interesting chess in every tournament and, of course, score as many points as possible.

... and for your German team?

We want to fin for sure! :)

Give us an overview of your daily routine during such a tournament!

In chess:
At a team tournament, we usually lineup the team the evening before. If necessary, we already start with the preparation. This means that we look which opponents we think are most likely and make a plan of which openings we need to look at the next morning. Then I usually go to sleep and our trainers analyse a few more variations. After breakfast, I look at the lineup and repeat my variations.
Questions of nutrition:
I don't follow a strict diet, but I try to make sure that my lunch is not too big and not too close to the game so that I don't get tired. During the game, I like to have a banana with me in case I get hungry.
Relaxing, sport, free time:
I usually avoid sports at tournaments because I don't want to "waste" energy before the game and usually don't feel like it after the game. It's often difficult to organize with dinner. But I try to go for a walk every day to get at least some fresh air and exercise a little. I usually do this once in the morning and often in the evening with the team. After our team meeting, I like to watch series before going to bed and that's about it for my free time.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

After the Mitropa Cup, I will play the open German Women`s Championship and the Women's European Championship. I haven't planned too much afterwards yet. Of course, I hope that I will also play at the Olympics in Budapest but for that to happen, my results in the next few months have to be right.

Do you personally associate something with the host city Apolda?

I once played an Open in Apolda. At that time, we also had a training course before the tournament. But that was a long time ago so my memories are a bit fuzzy.

Thank you very much for the interview Josefine!
