Discussion with Wolfgang Hoppe: A bundle full of memories

That was a special kind of boost: Bobsleigh legend Wolfgang Hoppe, double Olympic champion in 1984, six-time world champion and honorary citizen of Apolda, did not get the big sled on track, but started the fifth round as Mitropa's guest of honor, who was greeted with much applause -Cups with the symbolic first move put Matthias Bluebaum's queen pawns two squares ahead.

Against Italy, a close match and a clear win

Frederik Svane and his italian opponent Nicolas Perossa had to have the longest endurance yesterday. The two sat alone in the tournament hall, surrounded by several other participants and referees, and played the longest game of the day. It was 1½:1½ and the pressure was on Frederik's shoulders to at least achieve a draw or even win. Thanks to the extra exchange, the latter was also successful and in the end the german men had two team points and two and a half board points.

For the first time, seniors determine national champions

Premiere as part of the Mitropa Cup: In cooperation with chessXdream the chess club Erfurt organizes the first open championship for seniors. Under the patronage of District Administrator Christiane Schmidt-Rose (CDU) a seven-round tournament in the Swiss system will be played from February 16 to 22 - parallel to the Mitropa Cup in the mornings from 9.30 a.m. The champions will be crowned in the age categories 50+ and 65+. Seniors born in 1974 and older are eligible to start. As of February 6, 59 registrations had been received, the tournament is limited to 160 participants.
