Mitropacup 2024

February 14th - 23rd, 2024 in Apolda
Stadthalle Apolda, Klause 1, 99510 Apolda (Germany)

That was a special kind of boost: Bobsleigh legend Wolfgang Hoppe, double Olympic champion in 1984, six-time world champion and honorary citizen of Apolda, did not get the big sled on track, but started the fifth round as Mitropa's guest of honor, who was greeted with much applause -Cups with the symbolic first move put Matthias Bluebaum's queen pawns two squares ahead.

Wolfgang Hoppe, a native of Apolda, a two-time Olympic bobsleigh champion and multiple medal winner, will make the symbolic first move at Mitropacup on February 19. Axel Eger looks back on his life's work:

Frederik Svane and his italian opponent Nicolas Perossa had to have the longest endurance yesterday. The two sat alone in the tournament hall, surrounded by several other participants and referees, and played the longest game of the day. It was 1½:1½ and the pressure was on Frederik's shoulders to at least achieve a draw or even win. Thanks to the extra exchange, the latter was also successful and in the end the german men had two team points and two and a half board points.

Dmitrij Kollars is part of the German team in the Mitropacup. He has good memories of Apolda. He would always recognize the city's coat of arms, because he won a beauty prize with it in Apolda.

Looking over the shoulders of the adults and watching the moves in real life - that's what the masters of tomorrow can do on Saturday, February 17th. For the ninth time, chess coach Klaus-Peter Krug invites you to his traditional school chess tournament, in which the youngest players in the age groups U6 to U11 (born in 2013 and younger) compete.

For Matthias Bluebaum, anything other than winning the tournament with the German team would be "quite a disappointment".

Rasmus Svane remembers an adventurous trip and an ice cream voucher as a beauty prize.

Premiere as part of the Mitropa Cup: In cooperation with chessXdream the chess club Erfurt organizes the first open championship for seniors. Under the patronage of District Administrator Christiane Schmidt-Rose (CDU) a seven-round tournament in the Swiss system will be played from February 16 to 22 - parallel to the Mitropa Cup in the mornings from 9.30 a.m. The champions will be crowned in the age categories 50+ and 65+. Seniors born in 1974 and older are eligible to start. As of February 6, 59 registrations had been received, the tournament is limited to 160 participants.

Frederik Svane plays together with his brother Rasmus in the national team for the first time. In Apolda he wants to show good chess again.
